BYD to set up first Malaysian assembly plant at KLK TechPark in Perak

Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD Company Ltd will set up its first automotive assembling plant in Malaysia in Tanjong Malim, Perak.

KLK Land Sdn Bhd, the property arm of Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd, said in a statement on Friday that BYD will be the anchor tenant and take up 150 acres of its KLK TechPark in the first phase. Subsequent phases aim to attract vendors and businesses to form a fully fledged automotive ecosystem.

“BYD’s presence in Perak is expected to be a catalyst for Malaysia’s electric vehicle sector,” KLK Land said. “These spillover effects will enable local companies to participate in the global EV supply chain, further advancing Malaysia’s position in the regional automotive landscape.”

The 1,500-acre integrated industrial hub is envisioned by the company, one of the country’s largest palm oil producers, as a hub for advanced manufacturing and green technology. The investment from BYD was secured within a record of three months.

KLK TechPark is a long-term development made possible through close collaboration with the Perak government, said KLK chairman Tan Sri Lee Oi Hian.

“We look forward to [working] with the state government in supporting Perak’s move towards high-value industrialisation and contributing to the state’s socio-economic progress,” he added. (by The Edge)

Education Hub – UPSI & PSAS

1. Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI)

UPSI is a Public Institution of Higher Education (IPTA) with two campuses:

(a) Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah Campus (old campus) in Tanjong Malim town centre, approximately 10km away from proposed site.

(b) Sultan Azlan Shah Campus (new campus) in Proton City, approximately 11km away from proposed site.

As of September 2023, the total university population is 32,938 person:

2. Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah (PSAS)

PSAS was established by the Malaysia Ministry of Education in 2002 and currently offers 14 Diploma programmes and 1 Undergraduate programme.

As of 2022, this education institute has a total of 2,812 students.

It is the closest educational institution to the proposed site, which is approximately 4km away.

Industrial Development – Proton City & AHTV

1. Proton City

Launched in 1996, Proton City is jointly developed by Proton City Development Corp and DRB-HICOM.
Proton City is a freehold township that spans 4,000 acres in Tanjong Malim, which is approximately 10km away from the proposed site.
This mixed-use project is comprised of residential, commercial and industrial developments, including the Proton car assembly plant, UPSI Sultan Azlan Shah Campus and home to over 2,000 factory workers.
Perak Menteri Besar stated that Proton Holdings Berhad will fully relocate its Shah Alam operations to Tanjng Malim by 2027. Currently, Proton has 7,000 workers and it is estimated 21,000 people including their families will be moving to the township by 2027.

2. Automatic High Tech Valley (AHTV)

In October 2023, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd and DRB-Hicom Bhd signed collaboration agreement to jointly develop Automatic High Tech Valley.
The project has an estimated land area of 404.69 hectare and is expected to attract investment worth RM32 billion over the next decade.
Under this development plan, Proton City will be transformed into a global automotive centre for new energy vehicles (NEVs), with a focus on talent development, research and development (R&D), and urbanisation.
Perak State Government will expedite the implementation of AHTV by improving facilities and infrastructure of the area.
